Potol Bhapa / Steamed Pointed Gourd


I love to cook various types of Bhapa (steamed) dishes like Chingri Bhapa, Paneer Bhapa, Mach Bhapa etc as they are easy to cook and tastes outstanding. This time I tried the traditional Bengali recipe 'Potol Bhapa'. It's a delight for vegetarians as well as non vegetarians. It is a very easy recipe and calls for minimum spices, yet it tastes simply delicious. Potol Bhapa goes best with plain steamed rice. Do give this recipe a try and let me know how it turned out for you.


  • 8 pointed gourds.
  • 2 Tablespoons of black mustard seeds.
  • 1 Tablespoon of yellow mustard seeds.
  • 2 Tablespoons of poppy seeds.
  • 1 Tablespoon of yogurt.
  • Salt and sugar as per your taste.
  • 1 Tablespoon of turmeric powder.
  • 4-5 green chilies.
  • 1/4th cup of mustard oil.
  • Water as required.

In a bowl add both the mustard seeds and poppy seeds along with some water. Soak them for 1 hour.
In a blender put all the seeds along with that water, one green chili and little salt.
Make a smooth paste out of this.
Take out the paste in a steel box.
Add yogurt, salt, sugar, turmeric powder. Mix well and keep aside.
Wash the pointed gourds well with water. You can remove the skin of them or keep them as it is, totally your choice. I cut the pointed gourds into halves.
Sprinkle little salt and turmeric powder all over them. Rub them really well.
Heat a Teaspoon of mustard oil in a pan, add the pointed gourds.
Fry them for 5 minutes on low flame.
Then add the lightly fried pointed gourd in that steel box along with very little water.
Give everything a good mix.
Add 3 - 4 slitted green chilies and drizzle mustard oil on top.
Close the box with a tight lid.
In a kadai, heat 2 cups of water.
When the water starts boiling, place the box. Cover the kadai and cook low flame for 15-20 minutes.
Turn off the flame, let the box cool down a bit.
Then open it.
